Friends in Need is a Manchester-based philanthropy organization. Dedicated to helping women, Friends in Need raises millions of pounds a year for women-oriented charities both locally and nationally.
Overview and History[]
Founded in the 1960s, Friends in Need was dedicated at first to helping women seek higher education. Friends in Need helped get the first local female police officers promotions by publicizing their accomplishments, offered grants to female students who couldn't afford to attend colleges further away, and sponsored more extracurricular classes for women looking to work in emerging industries. Over time, the foundation's charity efforts also helped provide daycare for stay at home mothers, legal fees for women who were treated unjustly, and funded shelters for women with nowhere else to go.
The organization consists of a Board of Directors, overseen by the President. The board handles membership, the hiring of employees and the organization of big events. Friends in Need hosts an annual ball as well as several weekend tea parties. The Annual Friends in Need Ball features women inviting men to join them for the event, and changes to the tradition have led to disputes in the past.
